7 x 50 is ideal: In addition to the forgoing points:

a) Field of view: 7 x 50 binoculars usually give you a 7° field of view – your vision is spread to 7° of arc in the horizontal direction – which is sufficient to locate objects during nighttime and in poor visibility.

b) Depth of vision: 7 x 50 binoculars will give you good depth of vision – from about 20 metres to infinity without adjusting the focus control.

Other specifications

Waterproof: Waterproofing is achieved by making the casing airtight and filling it with nitrogen. Since moisture, spray, dust, etc cannot enter the binoculars, mildew (fungus) cannot form on lenses inside. Such binoculars will be long lasting. However, since these are expensive, most ship-owners today prefer to provide non-waterproof ones stating that professional cleaning may be done when necessary in ports where costs are not prohibitive failing which inexpensive replacements can be purchased. To check for mildew, clean the exposed lenses with a soft cloth and look through the wrong end of the binoculars, holding them about 30 cm away from your eyes. If they are not crystal clear inside, moisture or mildew exists and vision through the binoculars during normal use will be impaired to some extent. On vessels with small freeboard, such a tugs, supply boats, yachts, etc, where spray is shipped at bridge level, waterproof binoculars would be more suitable.
